People who are just getting started in this space for the most part have a very good understanding about basic community management. Getting to understand a fan base takes time, effort, and believe it or not – strategy – but it pays off if you put the effort in. Recently I had a friend ask what to do when that effort basically goes unnoticed. What do you do when fans stop talking? When community management and community engagement fail, whats the best move for the social media strategist?
Well here are the Top 3 Things To Do when you don’t know what the hell you are doing.
The first of the Top 3 Things To Do In New York Is:
1. Absolutely Nothing
Did I blow your mind? Do you need a minute to pick up the pieces? That’s right. Don’t do a damn thing. The Top 3 Things aren’t a gimmick, but this maybe the most important one to do correctly. You’re going to have to look back now and study your community in depth. Check out where they’re coming from and their common interests. What are those pages representing that you are not? Ask yourself,
– Is the community talkative in the first place or do they respond and observe in a different way?
-Does my content totally suck ass and am I going about this the wrong way?
-What are my competitors doing that encourages a conversation and how can I make it my own?
Answer those questions first. Be honest with yourself. If you’re still stuck move onto The Top 2nd Thing.
2. Challenge The Community
At the very least of your abilities you are nothing more than soapbox for a social media marvel to shine. In order to become a social marvel you’ll have to become more than just a soapbox. Become the catalyst in the conversation. Ask a question. Issue a challenge. Do something that ignites a passionate social media enthusiast to step forward. Become controversial and stop worrying about misrepresentation and defacing an image. You have no image. That’s your problem.
3, Do a Role Reversal
I mentioned benchmarking your competition. If you are still in trouble it is time to step away from the conversation and enter new ones. Become the fan. Fake it if you must, but start talking to a community and see what happens. This experience is genuine and you created it. See how the community manager operates and how they share this experience through social media. Take notes. You apparently need the help.
